Letting go of our things is sometimes easier when we have a clear idea of where they can go.
Finding a new home, a new owner or a new life for our things needn't be more difficult than throwing them in the trash.
Here are some local charitable and earth-friendly options to get you started.
Second Chance Saturdays: Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket every Saturday, 8 AM - 4 PM
accepting used clothing, boots, shoes, linens & towels.
Brooklyn Public Library Central branch: Grand Army Plaza. Accepts 3 boxes/week used CDs, DVDs, & books for donation.
Staples - 348 Fourth Avenue 718-222-5732
accepts old batteries, used ink cartridges...and...
This just in: Staples is now accepting computers, used computers, monitors, laptops, and desktop printers, faxes and all–in–ones to any U.S. Staples store.
All brands are accepted, regardless of whether or not the equipment was purchased at Staples. A recycling fee of $10 per piece of large equipment is charged to cover handling, transport, product disassembly and recycling. Smaller computer peripherals such as keyboards, mice, and speakers are accepted at no charge.
Follow this link for more information about Staples recycling:

Housing Works Thrift Shops/ Housing Works Bookstore
accepts usable and resalable items including women's and men's clothing, jewelry, accessories, shoes, housewares, books, artwork, and furniture.
Housing Works is the nation's largest non-profit minority-controlled AIDS service organization. Their mission is to reach the most vulnerable and under served among those affected by the AIDS epidemic in New York City, primarily homeless persons of color whose positive HIV diagnoses are complicated by a history of chronic mental illness and/or chemical dependence, and provide them with a comprehensive range of services designed to help them gain stability, independence, and dignity, and improve their overall health.
They're committed to advocating for the systemic changes necessary in public attitudes, policies and laws to ensure that AIDS and public health policies at all levels of government are both sound in concept and equitable in administration.
Donations are sold in thrift stores to raise money for their service organization.
